Over the long Labor day weekend I was itching to get out and explore a bit more, but after all my travels this summer, my bank account seemed a bit shell shocked. Luckily, my family owns a small cabin up near the the Colorado-Wyoming border and it seemed like the best idea to enjoy a weekend away without having to fork over more cash.
I always clarify that by cabin I mean walls, a roof + a couple odd ends of furniture. It by no means is one of the monsters built for weekend getaways that you can often find out in the woods in Colorado. Still, there is a bit of nostalgia to it as its been in the family for a long time and many of our Christmas trees come from our very own land around our cabin. I loved the laid back vibe of my recent Denver post, so I was excited to share more snaps of a weekend away in the woods.
Our cabin is tucked back among the pines and looks out over the valley entrance. Though there is no cell phone service, running water or electricity, I actually find it a bit peaceful and calming to have only the necessities for a weekend, ie water + food. The lack of running water is something I always have to adjust to, but in the end it just makes me more thankful for my sink when I get back home.
L is much more used to camping and “roughing it” than I am. He grew up hunting and camping, where I grew up in horse shows + tennis courts. But I figure I won’t get better being in the woods by snuggling up with Zeus on my couch and watching New Girl over and over.
^^ Chilly morning snuggles with Zeus on the deck
You know the old adage “Lightning doesn’t strike the same place twice?” Well our cabin is physical proof that is actually isn’t true. That ‘V’ marked into the concrete is where the lightning struck when it hit our cabin… the second time.
Aside from being a bit jumpy with a late night thunderstorm (can you blame us?? lol) we settled into a nice relaxing weekend spent with my parents and then the next morning fixing breakfast. I love the whole concept of #theartofslowliving… but a two hour time slot for cooking breakfast with a propane stove, took that to a whole new level. Never have I ever spent so much time cooking eggs, bacon and potatoes! I also couldn’t wait to get home to a sink + a shower at that point.
^^I found this hat from Gigi Pip and I love how perfect it is for Fall!
Long breakfasts and no sinks aside, I’m so glad I stepped a bit out of my comfort zone this past weekend! I’ve come to realize that growing up with a place to escape to for the weekend isn’t something that everyone was blessed with. And I wish I would have appreciated it more when I was younger… but I’m certainly planning on making up for that now.
How was your Labor day weekend? Did you travel or find a nice stay-cation to relax to?
xo Kelsey
